WHAT IS SPECIAL STEPS?
Special Steps is a program designed for families locally and abroad desiring a short or long term intensive therapy program for their child. Each program is individualized to meet the specific needs of the child. The program designed may include speech, language, oral motor, music, occupational, and/or behavioral therapies. Additionally, academic tutoring, computer based instruction, independent training, The Listening Program and/or intensive one-to-one skill development sessions may be incorporated.
WHO IS INVOLVED IN SPECIAL STEPS?
Children struggling with speech, language, communication, oral motor, feeding, fine motor, social interaction, and/or academic development would benefit from this program. Children from birth through adolescents are considered.
Our staff includes Speech-Language Pathologists and Assistants, Occupational Therapists, Behavior Analysts, Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts, Music Therapists, Yoga Instructor, Academic Specialists, and trained Technicians. Any or all of these professionals may be assigned to the child’s intervention program.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The process to begin a Special Steps program is initiated by contacting our Center. This communication should occur at least six months prior to the anticipated dates desired. There are limited spaces for this program; a program is scheduled on a first come first serve basis.
If the child is local or will be coming to the United States prior to the anticipated program dates, an assessment is scheduled to determine if the child would be a good candidate for Special Steps. Our initial goals would be determined during this assessment.
If the child is not local, a videotaped session of the child, all current reports about the child, and the stated goals of the parents are submitted for our review.
Once the child is accepted for a Special Steps program and the terms are accepted by both parties, the child program will be finalized and the child is ready to begin on the scheduled date.
WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF SPECIAL STEPS?
Each child’s and family’s goals are personal. They relate to the needs of both the child and the family. Goals are constantly changing as the child works with our staff. Parent training is an important part of our time together.
